An Empty Nest

From the moment you find out that you're pregnant with your first bundle of joy, until the day that your last child leaves home, a large portion of your existence is dedicated to their routine and schedule. Granted, some parents are more hands-on than others, but for the most part it's all about lifts, meal planning, homework, extra-curricula activity, kid-friendly holidays, etc.

And then, one day, you wake up and it's all come to a grinding, abrupt, painful halt.

And yes, even though you know the day is coming, and as much as you think you're prepared for it, it still comes as a shock as you try to acclimatise to this 'new normal'.

OUR STORY
Bryan and I are second-time rounders... Bryan has two sons and I have one daughter. Bryan's oldest son Kyle, is still in town and spends weekends at home with us. His younger son Brendon, has spent the last four and a half years studying in the USA. And my daughter Ashleigh, left to study in the UK last year.

So for the most part, it's just B and me...

The adjustment has been very difficult but, a year down the line, I am starting to embrace the changes and make the most of this 'new normal'. This new phase just so happened to also coincide with my husband's (much-planned and anticipated) "mid-life crisis". Hence our latest acquisition: a Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 motorbike...

So, that just gives you a little background. This blog site is going to be dedicated not only to biking day trips, biking holidays but also other trips and adventures that B and I will be embarking on, now that our nest, she is empty.

I'd love to hear from other 'empty nesters' and what they're doing to adjust to their 'new normal'.
